Unlike some books, you're never left wondering who a particular character is for very long as the author explains it very clearly. There are several families involved with various characters and Teresa writes with such authenticity that you can see the story play out in your mind's eye. It's the sense of intrigue that carries this novel along nicely, the need to hear just another chapter to find out what happens next. I listened on audio and found myself prolonging my household chores just to listen to one more chapter, and driving a little slower when it played in the car.
